“Despite dramatic fluctuations in the global macroeconomic climate, the volume and intensity of data and video traffic continues to surge as does the use of virtualization that moves computing tasks within the datacenter and over the long-haul network.” Notes Dr. Vladimir Kozlov, Founder and Chief Analyst, LightCounting. “Consequently, as the traffic increases, the demand for faster transceivers will drive sales.”

2009 marked one of the most turbulent recorded periods in the history for the optical transceiver business, if not the communication sector. With the global financial crisis well underway, demand for telecom, Fibre Channel, and Ethernet transceivers dropped sharply in late 2008 to early 2009 in direct response to the crisis. While the transceiver market was in better shape than the pre-telecom bubble years, many transceiver vendors were left with order cutbacks, or delays and with it came the challenge of managing potential excess inventory and maintaining inventory control during an economic crisis mode. The onset of the global economic meltdown forced companies into critical survival mode that resulted in staffing and salary reductions, lost bonuses, and reduced capital and discretionary spending. Some companies shed portions of their businesses, or exited the industry entirely while others closed manufacturing plants.

The flip side of the sharp market decline and perhaps a result of more prepared market was a cautious recovery that began to gain momentum in Q2 2009 driven by sales to foreign markets and emergent growth markets. Sales of optical transceiver increased by 6 and 10% in Q2 and Q3, respectively. IF this trend in demand is extrapolated into the next two quarters, sales in Q1 2010 could match Q2 and Q3 2008 levels. However, given the condition of the sustained global economic crisis we proceed with caution.

Report Abstract

After declining by 20% in the first quarter of 2009, global transceiver sales increased by
6% and 10% in the second and third quarters, respectively. Extrapolating this trend into the
next two quarters, sales in Q1 2010 are poised to match precrisis level of $600 million.

Transceiver markets showed considerable improvement in the second half of 2009, with
purchasing resuming again to replenish depleted inventories. Datacom applications
requiring Fibre Channel and Ethernet appear to be recovering the earliest, while SONET/
SDH and WDM modules used in telecom networks remain nearly flat so far.

The FTTx market has been the least affected by the economic downturn, since FTTx
deployments remains a strategic priority at service providers worldwide. However, despite
economic stimulus offered by governments in many countries, sales of FTTx modules
declined by 10% in the first and second quarters, posting a modest 6% increase in Q3 2009.
Sales of optical interconnects proved most surprising, increasing by 85% and 19% in Q2
and Q3 2009, respectively. Most of this increase is attributed to sales of high data rate
12x10 Gbps and 4x10 Gbps, transmitters, receivers, transceivers and 4x10 Gbps and 12x10
Gbps active optical cables for applications in high performance computers.

This report details quarterly sales of more than 100 product categories covering Q3 2008
to Q3 2009 for SONET/SDH, Ethernet, Fibre Channel, CWDM, DWDM, and FTTx transceivers,
parallel modules, and active optical cables. Data for the report was provided by more than
20 leading transceiver and optical components vendors.
