Transceiver Industry Market Share Report (Released March 2006)

By the end of 2005, the optical transceiver industry has largely completed restructuring that followed the burst of the telecom bubble in 2001. Several established vendors, including Agere (former Lucent Microelectronics), Alcatel Optronics, Corning and Nortel Optical Components, have exited the market by downsizing and selling their optical component businesses. Majority of startups formed in 1998-2000 were shut down, some of them were acquired and just a few remain in business.

How does the industry landscape look after the storm? This is not an easy question to answer since there is very little data on transceiver sales reported publicly. While LightCounting has been collecting sales information from 20 transceiver vendors for the last 3 years, our policy is not to disclose any vendor specific information in order to protect their confidential sales data. Since we can not report market shares of the vendors explicitly, we had to analyze the industry landscape by grouping vendors into categories, namely: top 3, top 6 and top 10. While protecting confidential sales data provided by the vendors, this approach does offer an insight into the market fragmentation.

We have also analyzed diversification of top 10-15 vendors by breaking the total sales into seven different product groups, by data rate: low (<=4 Gbps) and high (10 Gbps); reach: short (<2 km) and long (>=2km); and application: SONET/SDH, Ethernet/Fiber Channel and WDM. We have reported vendors that have at least 10% market share in at least one of these seven product groups, without naming these vendors explicitly.

This report will first look at global market share, examining which areas of the world sell the most optical transceivers. Then, the report presents findings on total market share in the industry. Details on product segment groups give insights into SONET/SDH, Ethernet/Fiber Channel, and WDM products. Finally, the report discusses vendor diversification by product groups.
