Abstract

How AMD created a formidable All-RAN chipset value proposition

The completion of the AMD acquisition of system-on-a-chip (SoC) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) world leading specialist Xilinx created a powerful all-radio access network—traditional, virtual and open RAN—silicon vendor with a most impressive roster of customers.

Having extended its portfolio of power efficient processors, and added accelerators and radio devices, AMD offers a comprehensive suite of 5G RAN products that address many of the pain points communications service providers (CSPs) encounter in their 5G rollouts from the cell site to the core. In addition, AMD covers a full suite of RAN architectures from traditional to novel ones such as disaggregated, virtual, and open RAN.

All in all, the underlying common denominator for 5G RAN product pain points is achieving energy efficiency while adopting architectural innovation and cost savings. In addressing these issues, the following analysis focuses on the RAN aspect of the new AMD portfolio, including radio, distributed and centralized units.
